The adoptive father of 16-year-old Sabrina Ray, whose 2017 starvation death sparked statewide outrage, admitted in court Friday to imprisoning his three children in their Perry home.
Marc Ray, 43, pleaded guilty to four felony charges: one count of child endangerment resulting in death and three counts of third-degree kidnapping. If he were convicted of the original charge of first-degree murder, Marc Ray would have spent life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Now he faces a minimum of 35 years in prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced at 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 11 at the Dallas County Courthouse.
“I intentionally and secretly confined by locking them in a room of our house and covering a window to the room and fastening the windows so it cannot be opened,” Marc Ray said.
He also said his “failure to obtain medical care caused Sabrina’s death.”
He confessed to putting the locks on the door and said his family members helped hide the locks from investigators, who found Sabrina Ray dead in May 2017. She weighed just 56 pounds at the time of her death.
“It was very difficult for Marc” to make the confession, said Jake Feuerhelm, Marc Ray’s attorney. “I think this is a major step in accepting his role in this.”
Sabrina Ray’s adoptive mother, grandmother, cousin and brother have also been linked to her death.
“It’s a unique situation to have an extended part of the family all involved to a degree in what happened to Sabrina and the younger girls, too,” Feuerhelm said.
Sabrina Ray’s adoptive mother, Misty Ray, awaits a trial scheduled for February.
“The evidence against Misty is going to remain the same as it did before Marc entered the plea,” Feuerhelm said.
