Human remains found in burning Albia building
A body was found inside a burning building in Albia, according to local officials.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office shared an update Tuesday morning to the fire that burned throughout Monday. Crews were at the scene Monday at the R.O. Cramer building along the Albia town square, which was in flames and had smoke billowing out.
Businesses on the first floor and apartments upstairs had to be evacuated while fire crews battled the flames.
All tenants except for one had been accounted for, according to authorities.
At approximately 8:47 a.m. Tuesday, crews located human remains in the building. The identity of the person has not been released pending an investigation and assistance from the State Medical Examiner's Office.
"We've not had a fire death out here since I've been on the department," said Albia Fire Chief John Freshwater, who has been on the job for 30 years.
The fire remains under investigation.
Freshwater told vlog he believes the victim was found "in the origin of the room where the fire started."

Onlookers were still shocked by the destruction of the fire.
"We grew up in Albia, and that was our J.C. Penney store," said Centerville resident Larry Bettis. "It’s a real heartbreaking thing to see that building gone."
Bettis and his wife, Sharon, were not initially aware that a body had been found. When informed, they added that the loss of life "just makes it all the worse."
Still, community members are grateful for the firefighters' efforts.
"I know they tried to get everyone out," Sharon said. "I know they did."
