Albuquerque Fire and Rescue marked a historic milestone yesterday by staffing an engine company with an all-female crew for the first time in its 125-year history. For the 10-hour day shift, all four positions and ranks on Engine 15 were staffed with female firefighters. One of the firefighters, Driver Burns, has spent 26 years serving with the department.According to the nonprofit Women in Fire, as of 2020, about 9% of firefighters nationwide were women. Only 6% of fire chiefs were female. Both statistics have been on the rise in recent decades.
