'It means the world to be recognized': Marvel Comics showcases real-life health care heroes
A Pittsburgh health network teamed up with Marvel Comics to tell the stories of its nurses’ heroic actions on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic. The nurses’ real experiences were used to create a superhero comic book, entitled “The Vitals: True Nurse Stories,” which was unveiled Thursday."It means the world to be recognized," said Andrew Cleary, RN with Allegheny Health Network (AHN). Cleary works in a COVID-only intensive care unit in the Pittsburgh region and is one of the eight AHN nurses depicted in the comic book. The comic book tells real stories that took place in Pittsburgh-area hospitals. "It can be very stressful. At times it can be very traumatic" said Cleary. "When you see the impact the virus has on patients, families. These patients are really sick."Cleary said he is honored to represent nurses, and allow the people to see what nurses do everyday, to battle COVID-19.“Throughout the pandemic, nurses have demonstrated extraordinary courage in the care they deliver. They are critical thinkers and patient advocates, delivering high quality care. I am in awe of their resiliency as they come to work every day, sometimes not knowing what they will face,” said Claire Zangerle, DNP, RN, and Chief Nurse Executive at Allegheny Health Network.“At Marvel, we tell stories about heroes every day. But this story is special. It tells a story about our everyday heroes – the nurses and health care professionals working tirelessly and courageously to save lives,” said Dan Buckley, President of Marvel Entertainment. “Along with AHN, we are honored to help tell these stories, which we dedicate to the real heroes who are saving the world.”According to data from the CDC, more than 170,000 health care workers have contracted COVID-19 and more than 750 have died from it. Approximately one quarter of health care workers hospitalized from March through May 2020 were nurses or nursing assistants.“COVID-19 challenges our nurses professionally and emotionally,” Zangerle said. “We know many of them are giving their best while under great stress. They are our heroes, and we are excited to honor them in such a unique way and powerful way with “The Vitals.”Cleary admits it is a challenge every day, but he said it is what nurses took an oath to do. "It's a chance to do something extraordinary for people in this pandemic, and going to work you see the impact that it has on people, you see that they're scared, that they're in an isolated environment you get to be kinda their light in that environment," said Cleary "You come in, you brighten their day up as much as you can, you do all the interventions you possibly can to give people the best shot at overcoming this."The comic book will be distributed throughout all AHN hospitals and is available online through Marvel’s website.
