The Ankeny Police Department hosted a Crime Free Multi-Housing Program event to educate property managers on reducing crime in rental communities.
The Ankeny Police Department hosted a seminar aimed at reducing crime across the city, where property managers learned how to best secure their buildings as part of a nationwide effort to make rental communities safer.
The Crime Free Multi-Housing Program is designed to help reduce crime, drugs, and gang activity at rental properties. Attendees learned about the dos and don'ts, from the application process to lease termination or eviction, and proper screening techniques and key control.
The event was open to everyone, including landlords, maintenance personnel, and leasing agents.
The department even brought in an attorney who specializes in landlord-tenant law.
The program consists of three phases. In phase two, officers visit properties to conduct environmental design assessments and risk evaluations. The department said simple measures like trimming bushes to a height of no higher than 3 feet and trees no lower than 7 feet can enhance visibility and deter crime.
The third phase involves a safety social where property managers and residents discuss neighborhood concerns.
The department emphasized the importance of community within a complex to help reduce crime, highlighting the need for a partnership between property management and the police department.
Once all three phases are complete, properties will be certified. The department noted that statistics show properties nationwide that have completed all three phases have reduced crime, which is the program's ultimate goal.
