A sixth-grade student in Ankeny spent two weeks outside of class working on an art project for her classmate with Down syndrome. The big surprise happened Tuesday afternoon at Prairie Ridge Middle School.
Liam Keith loves art and his dog Chewy. So much so, Chewy was the inspiration for his ceramic project. He wasn't able to be part of another project involving digital art. Harper Zarling heard that and got to work. Two weeks later, it was time to share her creation.
"I think he'll be really happy and excited," Zarling said.
Seeing Keith's reaction is a moment Zarling will cherish.
"It makes me feel really good that I was able to do this for him, and I know he loves his dog," Zarling said.
As for Keith, there is new artwork at home, reminding him of Chewy and his friend.
