Apartment complex to be built on former Plaza Lanes site in Des Moines
Construction on an apartment complex will begin soon on the north Des Moines property where Plaza Lanes once operated.
The three-alarm fire started at the historic Des Moines bowling alley in the early morning hours of Dec. 18, 2017.
Plaza Lanes opened its doors on Douglas Avenue in November of 1957. After a monthslong investigation, the city of Des Moines said it was determined that the fire was accidental in nature and caused by the self-heating of kitchen rags.
Nearly six years after the fire, work will soon begin on a development that will include 40 apartment units, a playground and a dog park.
The Des Moines City Council voted to approve a $400,000 loan to the developer during its meeting Monday night. Work is expected to begin this fall and could be done by late fall next year.
