The owners of a small business in Ankeny are spending thousands of dollars on repairs after a storm caused damage. Rain damage from Easter weekend destroyed $15,000 worth of equipment and merchandise.
Fans and humidifiers are on inside Atlas Games to dry out the space and keep humidity under control. Repairs started in mid-March when the owner says storms blew off 25% of the store's roof and caused leaks.
A temporary roof was put in place, but that also came off. The owners say their space is not just a store but also a place for people to play games. While those events are on hold, they are grateful for all the support.
"We are very thankful for what they have done. And we are also very thankful for the that we have up. Because all those funds are going to help make the play space for the community," Cole Newhard, Atlas Games owner, said.
Besides losing treasures in the inventory, another challenge during clean up is the humidity because the merchandise is very sensitive to moisture.
"We're doing our best to try and keep the humidity down a lot. Trying to keep it below 60. It's above that. It's not great for cardboard at all. So we're trying to keep that as low as possible with dehumidifiers. And also we're buying purifiers, which cost a lot of money," Newhard said.
Newhard says they will get a new roof for the building. Crews are monitoring the forecast because there needs to be no rain for three days for them to get to work.
