Video: Bear comes nose-to-nose with 17-year-old dog during California home invasion
A bear made an unexpected visit to Zoe Cadman's home in Monrovia, California, Saturday night, startling her 17-year-old dog, Doodle.
The bear appeared unfazed by Cadman's attempts to scare it off, and, after a leisurely stroll around her property, eventually left.
This was not the bear's first visit that day.
Neighbors reported that the same bear had ransacked freezers, wandered through kitchens, and even took a dip in a swimming pool earlier that morning.
Alice Atkins, a local homeowner, described the bear's antics.
"I looked in and his hind legs were on the windowsill and his front legs were on the chair," Alice Atkins, a homeowner in the area, .
Atkins recounted how the bear opened her freezer, ruining a gluten-free pizza and devouring pancetta and bacon.
Abbie Cornett, another neighbor, witnessed the bear in Atkins' kitchen.
"We tried banging pots and pans, but it just sat there eating out of the fridge," Cornett said.
When police arrived, they attempted to scare the bear away with beanbags.
Cornett resorted to using ammonia on rags to coax the bear out.
"That bear has gotten to be people-ized," she remarked.
California Fish & Wildlife officials advised residents to secure trash cans and lock doors and windows to prevent bear encounters.
For now, the neighborhood remains vigilant, locking doors to keep the bear out.
Doodle, having faced the fearless visitor, was rewarded with a steak dinner.
