Iowa men's basketball: Contract details, salary for new coach Ben McCollum
New Iowa men's basketball coach Ben McCollum will make over $3.3 million in the first year of his six-year contract, according to records obtained by vlog.
McCollum's contract includes an annual base salary of $500,000 with supplemental income of $2.85 million in 2025-26, for a total of $3.35 million. Other bonuses — including $75,000 for winning an NCAA Tournament game and $100,000 for a trip to the Sweet 16 — could increase McCollum's overall income.
His total compensation will increase each year, topping out at $4.1 million in the 2030-31 season. Overall, McCollum is set to be paid $22.75 million over six years, not including potential incentive-based bonuses.
McCollum will have an annual salary pool of $2.095 million to distribute for four assistant coaches.
Buyout details for Iowa's Ben McCollum
If either Iowa or McCollum wants to get out of the contract early, there will be penalties to pay.
McCollum would owe $5 million to Iowa if he leaves before April 1, 2026. That number decreases by $1 million annually through the end of the contract.
If Iowa wants to fire McCollum without cause during the first three years of the contract, it would owe him 80% of his remaining base salary plus supplemental compensation. That percentage drops to 60% of his remaining base salary plus supplemental compensation if Iowa wants to fire him in the final three years of his contract.
