Back-to-school season is here, and that means it’s time to find the right backpack for your child. Whether you are sending a kindergartener off for their first day or shopping for a high schooler who needs room for tech, lunch and everything in between, has you covered.
Lexie Sachs, executive director of the Good Housekeeping Institute, has been reviewing kids’ backpacks with Good Housekeeping for more than 10 years, testing them for durability, organization and comfort. Kids are part of the process too, giving feedback on fit, function and style.
Here are this year’s standouts:
Best overall: L.L. Bean Original Book Pack
If you are looking for an all-around great pick, it’s hard to beat this classic from L.L. Bean. It’s lightweight, holds up well over time, and comes in a variety of fun colors and prints to match any style. The backpack also has padding in the back and shoulder straps for comfort, and reflective strips for visibility.
Best for elementary school: Pottery Barn Kids Mackenzie Backpack
This is the backpack Lexie Sachs’ own elementary schoolers use, and they have tried plenty. Available in multiple sizes, the Mackenzie backpack shines when it comes to kid-friendly design. It’s comfortable thanks to curved, ergonomic straps, plus it includes a chest clip to help evenly distribute weight. It comes in a range of options, including a rolling version and an adaptive style for children who use wheelchairs or walkers.
Best for middle and high school: Columbia Zigzag Backpack
Older students need space, and the Columbia Zigzag delivers. It has a roomy main compartment that easily fits books and binders, a padded laptop sleeve for tech, plus multiple pockets to help keep things organized. The backpack also has padded shoulder straps that make it comfortable to wear.
Most popular: JanSport SuperBreak Backpack
JanSport backpacks have long been a favorite, and they are back on trend with Gen Alpha. The SuperBreak is simple, with one large compartment and a front utility pocket. It's lightweight, comes in a variety of colors and prints, and versatile enough to use for years.
What to know before you shop
Good Housekeeping recommends spending between $30 and $60 on a quality backpack that can last through the school year and beyond. Look for padded straps, durable fabric and enough compartments to keep your child organized. And do not forget to check the fit, especially for younger kids.
