People in nearly 45% of rented units across the U.S. are paying more than 30% of their income toward housing costs, according to census estimates released Thursday.Under 5% of counties had more renter-occupied units burdened by housing costs than not. The Department of Housing and Urban Development defines cost burden as paying more than 30% of income on housing costs, including utilities, according to the census release. Almost 23% of renter-occupied units were paying over half of their income on housing costs, or what the department defines as severely cost-burdened.The data released Thursday are American Community Survey five-year estimates calculated using a pool of data between 2019 and 2023.
