DAY FORECAST COMING UP. THANK YOU ERIC. A HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR GOT AN UNEXPECTED SURPRISE AT NORTON CHILDRENāS HOSPITAL YESTERDAY. OUR MEGAN MATTHEWS TALKED WITH THE STUDENT AND HAS MORE ON HIS SURPRISE GRADUATION CEREMONY. GETTING TO WALK ACROSS THE STAGE FOR GRADUATION IS A MILESTONE FOR MANY HIGH SCHOOLERS. BUT FOR LANDON LESTER, A SENIOR AT CLOVERPORT INDEPENDENT SCHOOL IN BRECKINRIDGE COUNTY, HIS GRADUATION LOOKED A LITTLE DIFFERENT. IT FEELS LIKE THEREāS A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT, LIKE, MIXED EMOTIONS GOING ON AT THE SAME TIME. A LITTLE BIT OF SADNESS THAT I WONāT GET TO SEE MY TEACHERS AGAIN OR ANYTHING. BUT AT THE SAME TIME, IāM READY TO GO ON TO THE NEXT. LIKE COLLEGE AND STUFF. IN MARCH, AT JUST 18 YEARS OLD, LESTER WAS ADMITTED TO NORTON CHILDRENāS HOSPITAL, WHERE HE WAS TOLD HE NEEDED A NEW HEART. ITāS HAD ITS UPS AND DOWNS, MIXED EMOTIONS EVERYWHERE, AND ALTHOUGH HE IS STILL WAITING FOR HIS HEART. THE STAFF AT NORTON CHILDRENāS HAD A SURPRISE UP THEIR SLEEVE. THROWING HIM HIS OWN GRADUATION WITH SOME OF LESTERāS TEACHERS EVEN SHOWING UP. HIS MOTHER, DON LESTER, EXPLAINING ITāS MORE THAN SHE COULD HAVE EVER HOPED FOR. BASICALLY, WE JUST WANTED TO MAKE EVERYTHING AS NORMAL AS WE COULD DO. WITH WITH THE SITUATION WEāRE IN. AND IT DIDNāT STOP THERE. LESTER WAS ALSO AWARDED WITH HIS CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENT FOR INDUSTRIAL MAINTENANCE, WHICH WILL BE PUT TO USE THIS FALL AS HE ATTENDS MURRAY STATE FOR ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING. A GRADUATE OF THE CLOVERPORT INDEPENDENT SCHOOL, CLASS OF 2025. CONGRATULATIONS, LANDON. WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU. ALTHOUGH IT MAY NOT BE THE GRADUATION HE WAS EXPECTING, LESTER SAYS ITāS SOMETHING HE WILL NEVER FORGET. THEYāRE ALL VERY KIND AND SWEET TO ME, AND THEY TRIED THEIR BEST TO DO ANYTHING THEY CAN FOR ME BECAUSE ITāS A TOUGH SITUATION. BUT ITāS JUST THEY DO THE BEST

Graduation is a milestone every high school senior looks forward to, but for 18-year-old Landon Lester, it came under unexpected circumstances. A senior at Cloverport Independent School in Breckinridge County, Kentucky, Landon received his diploma and celebrated his achievement not in his school auditorium but at Norton Childrenās Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, where he has been awaiting a heart transplant.āIt feels like thereās a bunch of different, like, mixed emotions going on at the same time. A little bit of sadness. I wonāt get to see my teachers again or anything, but at the same time, Iām ready to go on to the next, like college and stuff,ā Lester said. Hospital staff, determined to make the day unforgettable, organized a personalized graduation ceremony that even included the presence of some of Lesterās teachers.āWe just wanted to make everything as normal as we could do with what the situation weāre in,ā said Dawn Lester, Landon's mother. The day was made even more special as Lester was awarded a Certificate of Achievement for Industrial Maintenance. He plans to use the award this fall, as he attends Murray State University to pursue a degree in electrical engineering.āTheyāre all very kind and sweet to me. They tried their best to do anything they can for me because itās a tough situation. But itās just, they do the best they can,ā Lester said. Lester told sister station WLKY that although it's not the graduation he expected, it is one he will never forget.
