ChildServe has unveiled a new adaptive therapy playground in Johnston, built to be inclusive and accessible for children of all abilities.
Among the first to enjoy it will be Milo Kilgore, a 4-year-old with complex special needs who lives full-time at ChildServe.
"I don't know of any playground in the Des Moines or central Iowa area where a wheelchair can go fully into a playground," said Cassie Kilgore, Milo's mom.
"There are difficult things that bring people to ChildServe," Kilgore said. "But they do a really good job of making it fun and family-oriented and wrapping their arms around families."
ChildServe CEO Dr. Teri Wahlig said the playground is a place where children can build physical, cognitive, and social skills, all while simply playing.
"It's the brain's most favorite way to learn," she said.
The playground includes an accessible entryway for wheelchairs and features equipment designed for a range of sensory and physical needs.
"We try to have all the elements that help kids with balance, with movement, with sounds and experiences," Wahlig said.
She said the space also serves families — not just the children receiving care.
"Space like this can be helpful for a family to come together with their children and the siblings to really enjoy time together outside," she said. "That's therapeutic for the whole family."
Kilgore said she already envisions birthday parties and inclusive family gatherings at the playground.
"Milo can be with cousins and friends of friends or kids of friends and enjoy it all together at the same time," she said.
The playground also features a merry-go-round funded by Make-A-Wish, which Milo personally requested. It accommodates wheelchairs and has seats for other family members — making it a place where lasting memories can be made.
