The Columbus Blue Jackets are planning to honor beloved NHL player Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew, after they were killed by a suspected drunk driver in August.Johnny Gaudreau, 31, and Matthew Gaudreau, 29, were struck by a suspected drunk driver while riding bikes on a New Jersey road, just hours before they were to be groomsmen in their sister's wedding.In addition to two seasons with the Blue Jackets, Johnny Gaudreau spent his first nine NHL seasons with the Calgary Flames. The brothers attended Boston College and were teammates during the 2013-14 season. Matthew Gaudreau was a hockey player with the Minor League Reading Royals.With the NHL preseason set to begin next week, the Blue Jackets announced plans to honor the Gaudreau brothers throughout the 2024-25 season.During each game of the season, Blue Jackets players will wear a sticker featuring the word "GAUDREAU" on their helmets, with two doves between the numbers 13 and 21, Johnny and Matthew's numbers.Beginning with the club's first regular season game against the Minnesota Wild on Oct. 10, Columbus players will wear a patch featuring Johnny’s number 13 on their jerseys.For Columbus' first preseason game on Sept. 25, a moment of silence will be held for the two brothers. Additionally, proceeds from the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation 50/50 Raffle will go to the John and Matthew Gaudreau Foundation.All fans in attendance at the club's home game on Oct. 15 will receive a “13” patch like the ones players will be wearing on their jerseys.
