- Well, it's magic in the foam. - Yeah. - They're using a new foam, they're calling it DNA Tuned. It's just like, look, we are in a great, we're in the golden age of running. Golden age of running shoes. - You haven't said that in two, three episodes. - You like that, it's been a few. I'm Jeff. - And I'm Aly. - And this is a show about running. - [Aly] Answering your questions. - [Jeff] And we're gonna talk shoes. - [Aly] And training. - [Jeff] And shoes. - This is "The Amazing Runner's World Show". (upbeat music) Jeff, today we're talking shoes, but. - Shoes. - But in an exciting twist for our show, I got to pick the shoes that we're talking about. - I let you pick a shoe. - You did. - No we didn't. Yeah, I looked down, I was like, you're wearing the shoes. We should talk about 'em. - That's actually not what happened, let's not lie. (Jeff laughing) Someone said we should talk about shoes. And I said, let's talk about these. And you said, no. - And then we said. - And then you said okay. - You know what? Let's do that. - Let's do it. - I'm gonna talk about these shoes. You wanna tell the people what we got? - These are the Brooks Glycerin Max. - Glycerin Max. Yeah, Brooks started doing the Max versions of some of the shoes. We had Ghost Max. Well now Glycerin Max, Hyperion Max. I like this one because they actually have a new approach to cushioning rather than just like, hey, it's more. Max. I mean ultimately Max is like a play on max cushioning. Ultimate thick. - Yeah. - Real chunky soles, which these have. But you see that pink shining through there? - Oh, this is the woman's version. - The men's. - This is the men's. - Is the yellow. That's the secret sauce in this shoe. - Yeah, tell me about it. - You wanna hear about it? All right. - I do wanna hear about it. - All right, so they actually, typically when you build a shoe with two different types of foam, they're often two different pieces that are molded and then they're put together and glued. - Okay. - The problem with that is when you do that, you have that layer of glue which hardens things and stiffens them up. - Yeah. - And you almost always feel it underfoot. It's what happened when we had that neutral, the medial post for stability in shoes. It was a harder wedge of foam that people would just feel. - Yeah. - When you rolled onto it. And so it by and large disappeared on most shoes. And they've come to, this is not a stability shoe by the way, but they've come to more creative approaches to stability to get rid of that. - Yeah. - Feeling. So what they're doing is co-molding these. - Yeah. - It means they're molding the two pieces together. - Okay. - They're different foams though. - Okay. - So they have large cells. They're using nitrogen to inject bubbles in here, cells. - Okay, sure. - Into the foam, into the plastic material when it's all molten. So they're basically creating large cells in this white foam and little cells in the yellow foam. So you get more compression from the large cell foam. It just sinks and is a little softer. And then when you get onto that one, it's a little more responsive 'cause the cells don't quite have as much volume to compress and shrink. But it's still a pretty soft bouncy foam. So they can change the experience in there without that glue line. - For anyone that Jeff is currently losing, I can tell you, these shoes are great. They're super comfortable, I wear them almost every day. And I ran the New York City Marathon in them. - You did. - And they were fantastic. - How'd they feel? - Fantastic, best marathon shoes I've ever worn. And last year I wore the Ghost Max. And these, I found to be much more comfortable. - Well, it's magic in the foam. - Yeah. - They're using a new foam, they're calling it DNA Tuned. It's just like, look, we are in a great, we are in the golden age of running. Golden age of running shoes. - You haven't said that in two, three episodes. - You like that, it's been a few. I mean, it's just because we're using great materials. - Yeah. - I mean, when I first started running, it was EVA and it was, we still have EVA because it's pretty durable. It's cheap. It offers good enough cushioning for a lot of people. - Yeah. - In a budget shoe. Now this is a $200 shoe. - Right. - So you start using these modern foams, things get more expensive, and you're using a lot of the material. But when you look at this thing, it's a boat, let's be honest. - It's very light though. It is super light, it's very comfortable. Des Linden calls these the marshmallow shoes. - Yeah. - And I feel like that is a very adequate name for them. - Right, it's so deceiving. It's so deceptive because it looks like this should be a plodding shoe. Like what? - It's not. - It's not. The first time I put it on, I was like, whoa, I should not be running the speeds that I'm running right now. - Yeah. - And it's all, it ain't these legs, lemme tell you. It's the magic of the foam. Pretty good rubber. Now look at the thickness of this rubber. I dunno if you can see this at home. It's thick pieces of rubber. It doesn't cover the whole sole though, because that would add weight. - [Aly] Yeah. - And it would also make things much more stiff than it already is. But it's really thick because runners that are gonna buy this shoe, they wanna see durability. They don't wanna see this foam getting worn away. - Yeah. - And so you need a good rubber that's gonna hold up to the road. And there's a lot of it there, I'm telling you. But it's pretty soft. So it doesn't have this big clunky thing. It's a deceptively fast shoe. - I love it. - It's springy, and I think the magic is in that second foam, that's the springiness I feel. Even when I'm running pretty quick in it, it wants to get up and go. - It's so comfortable. - It's not a light shoe, I won't lie. But it doesn't feel heavy. - It's pretty light for me. For a normal runner. - For a shoe this size, it's pretty light. - Yes. - Yeah. - Yes. - But it's still. - My only thing I don't like. - [Jeff] Yeah. - I want them to make it in different colors. - Yeah, I mean. - Because you know I hate a white shoe. - White shoes are kind of still all the thing, where you get the pop color. You don't like that. - I guess. - So the Glycerin, I also have long liked the Glycerin for daily training because it's always sort of been the Cadillac for Brooks. Companies always went with the good, better, best model. - Yeah. - The Ghost was better and the Glycerin was best in the cushioning department. So it was always just a little softer. It was a little heavier, but it was also just a little bit more premium. When you would touch the collar, touch the tongue, it was always just, you buy it in the store, you grab it outta the box and you feel it and you're like, oh, that's soft. - Yeah. - Before you even put it on your foot. And that's intentional. Some of the lower model shoes, you don't have those touch points that are quite that and a little bit more Spartan to get the job done. - Yeah. - So this is dialed up. I mean, that's a lot of foam in there to just cradle your foot and just hug you. - It's so comfortable. - It's pretty nice. And even the sock liner, you touch that thing and I mean, it feels like it's memory foam almost. It's slow to respond. - But not too soft, it's not too soft. - No, it's not a marshmallow. That's why the marshmallow comment is a little bit deceptive, 'cause I feel it sink, but I think a marshmallow is like, and done. - No, it's not quite like that. - It's not, this isn't that. - Yeah. - Yeah. - What size are these? - Men's nine. - Oh, okay. - No, you can't have it. That's my lab sample, I gotta cut that one up. I know, it happens. Men's nines get cut up, women's sevens too. I dig it. Now, like I said, it's a $200 shoe. - Yeah. - Which is a radically different ball game now than when I started running. - All those decades ago. - Well, no, even when I started this job reviewing shoes. - All those decades ago. - It was actually a decade. You could get our best buy shoes, like the best value shoes that we were giving awards to were about 100 bucks. - Yeah. - And you could get shoes under 100 bucks. Good luck now. - Yeah. - Almost the entry level for a good performance running shoe is like 160. I mean, I can't grumble about prices. Eggs and whatever else, everything. - Okay, old man yelling at cloud. - [Jeff] No, no. - Let's talk about the shoes, not about the price of eggs. - Everything has gone up and so it's like, yeah. I wanna make sure that I'm gonna get durability and value and well, let's honest. Can I measure the fun per mile out of a shoe like this? - Yes. - It's, I hate to say it, oh, a $200 shoe is definitely worth it, but like. - I think it is. - Okay. It's a little more. - It's really worth it. - Yeah, that's the Glycerin Max, 200 bucks, out now. - Get it. (upbeat music)

No matter if you’re a seasoned marathon runner or a casual walker, a quality pair of the best walking shoes can make all the difference for your comfort and overall foot health. For years, our editors and the experts we’ve consulted (so many podiatrists) have recommended Brooks sneakers for their supportive cushioning and breathable material. After digging through several retailers, I found savings of up to 38% off Brooks sneakers this July. So, where’s the best place to shop for Brooks deals this summer? Overwhelmingly, the answer is Amazon. It’s offering the deepest discounts on the widest range of styles and colors. However, I also spotted decent deals on Brooks’ website, DSW, and Zappos. That said, I would skip Nordstrom. Since the retailer is running its Anniversary Sale right now, most Brooks deals have already sold out—except for the Ghost Max 2 in a few sizes. Our favorite Brooks deal of the summer is on the Ghost 16. Named our best overall Brooks walking shoe, these editor-adored sneakers combine ample cushioning with a bouncy stride. They even earned an American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) Seal of Acceptance for their promotion of foot health. Right now, they're a rare 29% off in a handful of colors.“From push-off to standing still, these non-rockers ensure I go bounce-free and that my feet stay supported but stable," said Deputy Digital Director Emily Goldman in her rave review. “Thanks to their neutral cushioning, these held up after walking miles across the city and after combined hours of lifting.”I also spotted savings on two of Jennifer Garner’s favorite sneakers: both the Adrenaline GTS 23 and the Glycerin Stealthfit 21 are up to 36% off right now. Not sure which celebrity-approved sneaker is right for you? Brooks’ Adrenaline GTS line is recommended by podiatrists for flat feet and overpronators, thanks to its GuideRails technology that helps increase stability for a smooth ride. On the other hand, the Glycerin Stealthfit 21 offers a more plush feel with extra cushioning, making it a great option for those who prefer a softer shoe.Discounts on popular Brooks sneakers tend to sell out quickly (in fact, inventory is already dwindling), so I recommend securing your size quickly before it goes out of stock.
