A Democratic candidate for Iowa governor is sharing more about her campaign and why Iowans should vote for her.
Sondra Wilson filed to run for governor last year. She’s an Iowa native from Nevada.
“If you want a better future, if you want gardens in every town and city, if you want a comprehensive housing plan that’s being put up, if you want expanded medical coverage for people, I would say read the platform,” said Wilson, stating reasons why Iowans should vote for her. “What are you going to vote for? Iowans have a choice right now to either voice for the same old, same old, business as usual we’ve seen in politics, or we can see something that we’ve never seen before and make HERstory.”
Wilson said she’s an entrepreneurship major and pre-law student at Iowa State University.
Wilson has never run for public office. However, she says there’s a specific reason she’s going for the highest office in Iowa.
“I remember thinking, I could run for mayor or county board of supervisor or all these other roles or legislator, but at the end of the day, the math is that it’s the person at the very top — the head of the executive branch—that everybody’s underneath that thumb,” Wilson said. “I was like, ‘That’s what needs to be replaced.'”
Wilson is a transgender woman who says she would like to bring about more compassionate conversations surrounding LGBTQ+ rights.
“I do think that there’s a fairness issue in sports, and I think this entire topic can be discussed in a way that doesn’t incite harassment against transgender women,” Wilson said. “This can be discussed in a way that lifts people up and brings compassion to people about what we’re going through.”
Wilson joins a Democratic primary that includes and Julie Stauch, who served as former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg’s Iowa political director ahead of the 2020 caucuses.
Iowa’s 2026 primary election is set for June 2, 2026. With less than a year until the election, Wilson is now working on getting the required 3,500 signatures — at least 100 signatures coming from at least 19 counties — for her name to appear on the ballot.
