Central Iowa drivers, rejoice: Construction on Fleur Drive done after 6 years
Construction on one of the busiest roads in Des Moines is done.
The Fleur Drive Reconstruction project, as city officials call it, cost $23 million and took nearly 6 years. Work included new pavement, sidewalks and medians on the stretch of road that carries roughly 30,000 people each day between downtown and the city's south side.
"We know the running joke has been that Fleur Drive is always under construction," City Engineer Steve Naber said in a news release. "Today, we're happy to say that the city is done with construction on Fleur Drive, and travelers will appreciate the new pavement and new sidewalks along with the beautiful, landscaped medians."
Drivers on Fleur will still see signs of construction: Nearby projects at George Flagg Parkway and Gray's Lake will be completed over the next several months.
“We appreciate the patience and humor our residents showed through this process. It takes a lot of effort and coordination to rebuild our infrastructure," Mayor Connie Boesen said in the release. “We’ve all earned the right to laugh about the ongoing self-improvement, and more importantly, to travel Fleur Drive without dodging cones.”
