Des Moines high schools merge football teams for first time
AUTO GROUP. HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL OFFICIALLY KICKS OFF NEXT WEEK. AND THERE’S ONE TEAM IN THE METRO THAT’S NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO FIELD A TEAM THIS YEAR. SO FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, THE HEART OF DES MOINES IS GOING TO SEE TWO METRO TEAMS COME TOGETHER AS ONE. SHANNON EARHART WENT OUT TO PRACTICE ON TUESDAY AND FOUND OUT COULD THE MERGER WORK? THE DES MOINES ROOSEVELT FOOTBALL FAMILY JUST ADOPTED ABOUT 20 NEW KIDS. AT FIRST, I WAS KIND OF SCARED, LIKE WE WERE GOING TO GET TREATED AS LIKE, YOU KNOW, THE STEPS, KIDS OR WHATEVER. BUT HOOVER’S FOOTBALL PROGRAM SHUT DOWN. PLAYERS WERE LEFT WITH TWO OPTIONS. SUIT UP FOR ROOSEVELT OR SIMPLY QUIT. IT’S KIND OF SAD, BUT I FEEL LIKE AS LONG AS WE ALL JUST STILL GET THE CHANCE TO PLAY THE GAME WE STILL LOVE. I’M OKAY WITH IT. NUMBERS WERE LACKING AND IT WAS, YOU KNOW, HERE AT ROOSEVELT, WE’RE GOING TO HAVE THREE FULL TEAMS. YOU KNOW, IT’S A IT’S A BIGGER PROGRAM. THERE’S MORE PARTICIPATION HERE. AND I THINK OUR KIDS ARE EXCITED. LIKE ANY MERGER, IT TOOK TIME TO GET ADJUSTED FOR US. THE CHALLENGES WERE KIND OF JUST LIKE, HOW ARE WE GOING TO ACCEPT THESE GUYS, PEOPLE, YOU KNOW, DOUBTING US, YOU KNOW, SAYING, IS THIS EVEN GOING TO BE A POSITIVE THING OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT? A LOT OF PEOPLE ON THE OUTSIDE WHEN IT FIRST HAPPENED WERE WORRIED ABOUT LIKE FIGHTS AND STUFF, LIKE THEY THOUGHT WE WOULDN’T GET ALONG, BUT NEVER IN ONE TIME HAVE I EVER HAD AN ISSUE WITH ONE OF MY TEAMMATES FROM HOOVER. ROOSEVELT HAD ONE WIN LAST SEASON WHILE HOOVER WENT ZERO AND NINE. I ALSO WANT TO WIN GAMES, TOO. HOOVER HASN’T WON A SINGLE GAME IN LIKE, THE PAST THREE YEARS. YEAH, WE WON ONE GAME, SO THERE WAS NO ROOM TO JUDGE ANYBODY ELSE IN THAT POSITION. YOU TALK ABOUT WINNING A LOT AND GETTING THAT INTO THEIR BRAIN THAT WE CAN WIN. THE SEASON OPENER WILL BE THE FIRST TIME EVER TWO HIGH SCHOOL TEAMS PLAY AS ONE. IT’S HONESTLY ONE OF THE BEST TEAMS I COULD EVER ASK FOR. I ALREADY HAD A LOT OF LOVE FOR MY ROOSEVELT TEAMMATES, BUT MY NEW ROOSEVELT TEAMMATES, MY HOOVER GUYS, I HAVE A LOT OF LOVE FOR THEM TOO NOW. SO I WANT TO WIN. THE HOOVER SENIORS HAVE NEVER WON A VARSITY FOOTBALL GAME. THINK ABOUT THAT. THEY DON’T KNOW WHAT IT’S LIKE TO WIN IN THE ROOSEVELT. SENIORS IN THEIR THREE YEARS HAVEN’T HAD MANY WINS EITHER. SO COACH ERNSTBRUNN TELLS ME THAT THE CULTURE THIS YEAR IS ONE FAMILY, ONE TEAM, ONE GOAL. THAT GOAL IS TO WIN EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT. IT STARTS WITH LINCOLN IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS.
