Suspect killed in gunfire exchange with law enforcement along Interstate 80
Authorities say a suspect is dead after a gunfire exchange with law enforcement during an investigation along Interstate 80 that led to an hourslong shutdown.
At around 1:34 a.m. Tuesday, law enforcement from multiple agencies including the Dallas County Sheriff's Office and the Iowa State Patrol were called to investigate a traffic complaint near the 104 mile marker of Interstate 80 near Earlham.
The Dallas County Sheriff's Office says the suspect fired multiple shots at law enforcement "without provocation." More officers and deputies responded to the scene and were shot at by the suspect, according to the sheriff's office.
Officers returned fire and hit the suspect, who was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers and deputies involved have been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues, according to the Dallas County Sheriff's Office.
