Des Moines police confirm second arrest in assault on DarQuan Jones
The Des Moines Police Department confirmed Friday a second man is in custody in connection with the assault of DarQuan Jones.
Des Moines police said 27-year-old Jesse James Downs surrendered himself into police custody Friday at 1 p.m.
Downs is charged with willful injury.
Earlier in the day, Police announced the arrest of 28-year-old Dale Lee Millard, who is charged with willful injury causing serious injury.
Police found Jones, a 22-year-old black man, with five broken bones in his face and a broken arm in the 5200 block of South Union Street.
Jones reported to police that two white men beat him and that one called him racial slurs.
"What we got here is justice,” said Daryl Jones, DarQuan Jones’ father. “Like I said, my son is getting better. He is smiling. He is back doing a little bit. He’s getting a little better. I am just proud of my city coming together"
Police said no additional arrests are expected in the case.
