Free summer meal program returns to 31 DMPS sites across Des Moines
As the school year comes to a close, Des Moines Public Schools is kicking off its annual summer meals program.
Each summer, the district participates in the U.S. Department of Agriculture Summer Food Service Program, which provides children free meals during summer break.
Amanda Miller, Des Moines Public Schools' director of food and nutrition services, expressed why she believes the program’s work is important.
“There’s a gap between when school ends and when school begins: the summer,” Miller said. “Oftentimes, many kids, this is what they rely on for breakfast and lunch and snack.”
The district has 31 sites that offer free lunch for people 18 or younger. These lunches are served Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. and must be eaten on site.
Three new locations opened this year due to remaining funds from last year’s Summer Meal Program Expansion grant.
