Editorial: Honoring the legacy of late Simpson College President Jay Byers
This week we honor a Central Iowa business leader we lost far too soon — president of Simpson College, Jay Byers.
Many of you who follow vlog's weekly editorials know that on occasion we have used this forum to honor significant business leaders in our community. If ever someone was deserving of a few moments of our time, it's Jay. Jay was only 54 when we lost him. But what he accomplished in those 54 years was significant. For years, Jay presided over the impressive economic growth in central Iowa as the president and CEO of the Greater Des Moines Partnership. Under Jay's leadership, the Partnership experienced unprecedented growth, representing 11 counties, 24 affiliate chambers of commerce and over 6,500 members and 400 investors. This cumulative work helped to transform the Greater Des Moines region into one of the fastest-growing metro areas in the country. Think of some of the tentpole accomplishments that occurred during Jay's oversight – the ICON Water Trails project, Lauridsen Skatepark, and the work we're watching take place at the Des Moines International Airport terminal.
More recently, Jay had transitioned to serving his alma mater, Simpson College. In a short time, Jay had already made a profound impact.
While all these and more professional accomplishments and accolades would fill pages, Jay was most proud of his work as a father and husband. A couple of years ago my wife and I ran into Jay at an outdoor event. For the few minutes we spent with him, all he could talk about was his wife Katie, and his daughters Sophie and Charlotte. While the legacy Jay leaves our community is significant, the one he leaves with his family and friends, is immeasurable. Rest in peace, Jay Byers.
