The Electronic Music Festival in Santa Cruz is paying tribute this week to the art of making music with electronic devices. It's only the 2nd such festival ever to be conducted in the country, and judging by the enthusiastic response, this is just the first of many. Really no outlet. Electronic music isn't really played in the nightclubs and uh *** lot of other concerts they, you know, in the classical music vein they do Mozart and Beethoven, but, uh, music from today our 20th century gets passed over. Electronic music is much more prevalent than many think. About 80% of the music we hear today is electronic, but this music festival concentrates more on the experimental end of the spectrum. Electronic music buffs say that no masterpieces yet exist, or if they do, we don't have the perspective to understand them. The music we think of as our traditional classical music was actually very innovative in his time. Mozart and Beethoven, for instance, were exploring *** brand new tremendous instrument called the piano. Uh, was shocking people all over the country. They, they were all the world. They were used to little bitty tiny sounds from *** harpsichord, and they get this big thunderous thing that can just shake the rafters, and it was *** long time before people liked all of his piano music. So you think that maybe 200 years from now people will be looking back at our electronic music with, with the same wonder. Although it's more likely people will look back at us 20 years from now and say, what in the world were they trying to do? Adrian Laurent, Action 8 News, Santa Cruz.
