Electronic music has been around longer than you may think. Santa Cruz hosted its second-ever electronic music festival in September 1981, paying tribute to the art of making music with electronic devices.
At the time, many viewed electronic music as experimental and niche, a stark contrast to how it dominates global charts and festivals today. "Electronic music isn't really played in the nightclubs and a lot of other concerts,” one enthusiast said.
Organizers compared the reception of electronic music to classical music, when Mozart and Beethoven shocked audiences with their innovative compositions. “Maybe 200 years from now, people will be looking back at our electronic music with the same wonder,” one participant mused.
It did not take two centuries. Now, only four decades later, electronic music enjoys widespread acclaim and commercial success, solidifying its place in popular culture while continuing to push boundaries.
