Escucha Mi Voz member detained by ICE in Iowa City
An employee of Bread Garden Market in Iowa City was taken into immigration enforcement custody this afternoon, according to immigrant advocacy group Escucha Mi Voz. The group stated Jorge Gonzalez Ochoa was arrested by two federal agents in plain clothes.
Gonzalez Ochoa and his wife moved to Iowa City from Colombia last November and live with their baby in the Catholic Worker House. He was reportedly working to apply for asylum and wore an ankle monitor for ICE tracking.
Gonzalez Ochoa is currently held in the Linn County Jail on an ICE hold.
In a statement, Escucha Mi Voz said the actions taken were "unprovoked and dangerous."
The group added, "We demand Jorge's immediate release and an end to the violent tactics of ICE that put our communities at risk."
On Friday, ICE confirmed that its agents detained Gonzalez Ochoa.
ICE provided a statement regarding the incident, saying, "Gonzalez, was under criminal investigation for fraud, attempted to evade and resist arrest. Officers identified themselves to both the business managers and Gonzalez."
They asserted that agents executed the arrest professionally and in full compliance with the law.
