Investigators actively search for Evansdale murderer 10 years later
July marks 10 years since two northeast Iowa cousins were abducted and killed.
Elizabeth Collins and Lyric Cook went missing on July 13, 2012.
Hunters discovered the girls' bodies in a remote wildlife area in Bremer County five months after they went missing.
Two gazebos in Angle Park Memorial Island memorialize Lyric and Elizabeth. The girls' bikes were last spotted in the park.
"It's still devastating every day not to have her," said Heather Collins, Elizabeth's mother and Lyric's aunt.
"It's the first thing you think of in the morning and the last at night. For me, it's very fresh. Doesn't seem like 10 years," said Drew Collins, Elizabeth's father.
No arrests have been made in the case.
Lyric and Elizabeth's families continue to get updates from state investigators. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation says the investigation is still active.
According to the DCI, several people have confessed to the murders, but their stories didn't add up. This is one reason the DCI has never revealed the girls' cause of death.
"Everything inside of me as a husband and father would want to know that myself so that makes me want to provide that to the family while the greater evil is to let that out," said DCI agent Scott Reger.
Investigators are still asking for help and they need your help.
"What we find over and over again with unresolved cases. These things come together because the public continues to provide information and the investigators continue to pound that rock over and over again," Reger said.
"The ultimate goal is to just find out who did this. To find out who or whom took our girls," Heather Collins said.
To mark the anniversary, the city is holding a 10-mile ride and drive to raise money for Crime Stoppers.
The reward to find Lyric and Elizabeth's killer is now more than $100,000. If you have a tip, email the Division of Criminal Investigation at dciinfo@dps.state.ia.us, or call the Cedar Valley Crime Stoppers at (855) 300-8477.
