First-ever World Shot Put Series ends in dramatic fashion

Fans at a packed Drake Fieldhouse saw two elite throwers achieve a lifetime best

POWERED BY CARL’S AUTO GROUP. SOME OF THE BEST THROWERS IN THE WORLD GATHERED WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT THE DRAKE FIELDHOUSE FOR A BRAND NEW SHOT PUT EVENT. LITTLE SHOT WITH A TWIST. HERE’S vlog SHANNON EARHART. THERE WERE CHAIN GANGS AND FIRST DOWN MARKERS HERE AT THE VERY FIRST WORLD SHOT PUT SERIES AT THE DRAKE FIELDHOUSE. 15 COLLEGIATE AND PROFESSIONAL SHOT PUTTERS WOULD TRY TO CLEAR THE DESIGNATED DISTANCE TO ADVANCE TO THE NEXT ROUND. IF THEY COULDN’T CLEAR IT, THEY WERE ELIMINATED. EACH PRO DID GET ONE CHALLENGE. TRUST ME, THIS IS UNLIKE ANYTHING THESE FANS HAVE SEEN BEFORE. EVERY SHOT PUTTER CLEARED THE 50 FOOT MARKER, BUT CAM JONES OUT OF IOWA STATE, WAS THE ONLY COLLEGE ATHLETE TO CLEAR 60. HIS NIGHT WOULD END AT THE 65 MARK. FIVE GUYS ADVANCED TO 70FT, INCLUDING RYAN CROUSER, THE WORLD RECORD HOLDER AND CREATOR OF THE WORLD SHOT PUT SERIES. CROUSER ACTUALLY MISSED HIS SECOND ATTEMPT, SO HE THREW THE ONE TIME CHALLENGE FLAG FOR THE EXTRA ATTEMPT. THE THREE TIME GOLD MEDALIST WOULD COME UP SHORT AND HE’D FINISH IN FIFTH PLACE. TWO GUYS MADE IT TO THE 73 MARK. ROGER STEEN IS THE FIRST ONE TO THROW. THEY WOULD BRING OUT THE CHAIN GANG TO SEE IF HE WAS GOOD, AND HE WOULD BE. TRIP. HE WOULD THROW NEXT AND CLEAR IT WITH ROOM. 73FT IS A LIFETIME BEST FOR BOTH GUYS AS THEY ADVANCE TO 74FT. NEITHER WOULD CONVERT ON 74, SO THE TIE BREAKER WAS DECIDED BY TOTAL NUMBER OF MISSES. IT’S ROGER STEEN WHO WAS MORE CLEAN. HE WOULD CAPTURE THE VICTORY BELT VIA TIE BREAKER. I DON’T KNOW IF IT WILL FIT, RYAN SAID. IT MIGHT NOT FIT AROUND MY WAIST. THIS IS GOING TO STAY ON MY SHOULDER FOR NOW. THE CROWD DEFINITELY HELPED. I DROVE DOWN TODAY, ACTUALLY A LITTLE TIRED TO START, BUT THEN JUST KIND OF AS SOON AS THE BALL GOT ROLLING WITH THE GREAT ENERGY HERE, IT WAS JUST STEAMROLLING DOWN AND YOU GOT TO CATCH THE WAVE AND RIDE WITH EVERYBODY ELSE.

The first-ever World Shot Put Series brought the house down Wednesday night at a packed Drake Fieldhouse. The fans roared as the throwers kept clearing the line, which was being pushed back with each passing round. In the end, Roger Steen won via tiebreaker over Tripp Piperi. Each thrower hit a lifetime-best 73 feet, but Steen had a fewer number of total misses, so he was proclaimed the champion of the inaugural event.Three-time Olympic gold medalist Ryan Crouser created the event and also competed. Crouser came up short, finishing in fifth place. Crouser, along with many of these throwers, will compete again at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Drake Relays as part of the World Athletics Continental Tour.Drake Relays coverage:What a hunk: 80-pound pup crowned Drake's 2025 Most Beautiful BulldogDrake neighborhood businesses get ready for the Drake Relays crowdGrand Blue Mile brings in runners of all ages and abilities to downtown Des Moines2025 Grand Blue Mile championship races delivers nail-biting dramaPhotos from World Shot Put Series at Drake University in Des Moines
