First fall frost finally reaches Iowa

Before this week, parts of the state had yet to drop below 40 degrees this fall.

IT HASN’T REALLY FELT LIKE OCTOBER OUT. BUT NOW THAT HAS CHANGED. WE KIND OF CROSSED THE MIDWAY OF THE MONTH, AND THAT’S WHEN MOTHER NATURE IS LIKE, ALL RIGHT, LET’S START TURNING THINGS ABOUT THAT. YEAH, WE NEED TO ACTUALLY GET OUT OF 80 DEGREES. YES. WE’RE FINALLY GOING TO BE COOLING DOWN HERE THIS WEEK. I MEAN, LOOK AT THIS MAP. IT’S A LITTLE BIT HARD TO READ THE NUMBERS OKAY. BUT IF YOU LOOK AT ALL THE GREENISH COLORS ON THE STATE OF IOWA, THOSE ARE PLACES WHERE WE HAVEN’T YET DROPPED BELOW 40 YET THIS FALL, A LITTLE BEHIND SCHEDULE, RIGHT? I MEAN, WE’RE ON AVERAGE, IN FACT, WE’LL SHOW YOU THAT ON AVERAGE, OUR FIRST FROST SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED, YOU KNOW, A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO OR SO, LIKE OUR FIRST 36 DEGREE TEMPERATURE ON AVERAGE HITS ABOUT THE WEEK OR SO INTO THE MONTH. WE HAVEN’T HAD DONE THAT. OBVIOUSLY, WE HAVEN’T COME CLOSE TO A FIRST FREEZE YET, WHICH USUALLY WOULD BE ABOUT A WEEK OR SO AGO. THIS IS ACTUALLY THE TIME OF YEAR WHEN WE START TO GET TO OUR FIRST HARD FREEZE HERE, AT LEAST AROUND THE DES MOINES METRO AREA. YOU GOT TO GO A LITTLE BIT LATER ON TO GET USUALLY YOUR FIRST FREEZE IN PARTS OF SOUTHEASTERN IOWA. ET CETERA. SO ON AND SO FORTH. BUT BASICALLY WE ARE LOOKING AT FINALLY FREEZING TEMPERATURES. WELL, MAYBE TONIGHT IN PARTS OF NORTHWEST IOWA WHERE YOU SEE THAT PURPLISH COLOR, THE REST OF THE STATE, MAYBE SOME PATCHY FROST TONIGHT IF OUR WINDS DIE DOWN JUST ENOUGH, ALLOWING OUR TEMPERATURES TO SETTLE DOWN INTO THOSE MID 30S. AND MAYBE A FEW OF THOSE ICE CRYSTALS TO FORM. SO IF YOU GOT THE JACK O LANTERNS ON THE FRONT PORCH, IF YOU HAVE MAYBE SOME FLOWERS STILL LEFT OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT FOR THE FIRST TIME, YOU MIGHT HAVE TO FINALLY COVER THEM UP THIS EVENING. IF NOT THIS EVENING, DEFINITELY TOMORROW NIGHT. WE’RE ACTUALLY GOING TO BE GETTING EVEN COLDER HERE AHEAD, THE FULL FORECAST WE’LL TALK ABOUT WHEN WE DO START TO WARM BACK UP, WHEN WE COULD GET WET AGAIN.
