Flood warning issued for parts of central Iowa, including Des Moines River and Raccoon River
AND NO BIG CHANGE FROM RECENT DAYS, THOUGH WE ARE NOT DEALING WITH HEAT OR SEVERE STORMS TONIGHT. WE ARE DEALING WITH RISING RIVERS, THE DES MOINES RIVER AND THE RACCOON RIVER ARE BOTH EXPECTED TO HIT MINOR FLOOD STAGE BY TOMORROW MORNING. THAT MEANS WE ARE NOT EXPECTING MAJOR DAMAGE. THAT’S GOOD NEWS, BUT WE ARE SEEING SOME ROAD AND TRAIL CLOSURES IN ADVANCE OF THAT FLOODING, INCLUDING GEORGE FLAG PARKWAY IN DES MOINES, WHICH SITS ALONG THE RACCOON RIVER. IT’S BLOCKED OFF FROM SOUTHWEST 30TH STREET TO PARK AVENUE. THE CITY OF DES MOINES HAS CLOSED A LOT OF TRAILS THAT GO RIGHT ALONG THOSE RIVERS, INCLUDING THE PRINCIPAL RIVERWALK FROM PRINCIPAL PARK NEAR THE CONFLUENCE OF THE DES MOINES AND RACCOON RIVER TO WALNUT STREET. A FULL LIST OF TRAIL CLOSURES CAN BE FOUND ON THE CITY’S WEBSITE. THE CITY IS ALSO PARTIALLY BARRICADED. THE NORTHWEST PARKING LOT AT GRAY’S LAKE PARK. THE LIGHTS IN THE ROUEN CONNECTOR, WHICH GOES UNDER FLEUR DRIVE AND CONNECTS GRAY’S LAKE AND WATERWORKS PARK, ARE TURNED OFF. THIS IS STANDARD PROTOCOL FOR THE CITY WHEN FLOOD CONCERNS ARISE. ALL RIGHT, WELL, LIKE WE TALKED ABOUT, IT FEELS GREAT OUTSIDE, BUT WE DON’T NEED ANY MORE RAIN. SO HOPING TO HEAR THAT NO MORE IS COMING OUR WAY, AT LEAST IN THE NEAR FUTURE. YEAH, IT SEEMS LIKE NOT THAT LONG AGO, JASON, WE WERE TALKING ABOUT DROUGHT CONDITIONS IN OUR STATE. IT REALLY WASN’T THAT LONG AGO. I MEAN, ALL THIS RAIN KIND OF CAME AT THE SAME TIME, AND NOW IT’S LIKE, WELL, WE’VE JUST GOT TOO MUCH. AND YEAH, AS YOU GUYS WERE TALKING ABOUT THE FLOOD WARNINGS THAT WE HAVE IN PLACE, YOU LOOK AT THE DES MOINES RIVER AT SOUTHEAST SIXTH STREET AGAIN, THAT INCHING TOWARDS MINOR FLOOD STAGE AS WELL TOMORROW, AS WELL AS THE RACCOON RIVER AT FLEUR DRIVE. SO WE DO HAVE A FEW SHOWERS OUT THERE RIGHT NOW TO THE NORTH. NOTHING SUBSTANTIAL, BUT ANY RAIN AT THIS POINT. NOT NECESSARILY GOOD RAIN. YOU CAN SEE THAT NEAR SIOUX CITY DOWNWARDS TOWARDS ATLANTIC, AND A SLIGHTLY STR
