Woman attacked by 11-foot gator, dragged underwater in Florida river
A 27-year-old woman was hospitalized , according to the Martin County Sheriff's Office.
The woman and her boyfriend took their boat to the South Fork River near Southwest Linden Street.
Deputies said the woman was standing in waist-deep water with her dog when an alligator bit her hand and wrist. The alligator quickly pulled her underwater before releasing her.
Once she was released, her boyfriend drove her to the boat ramp at Charlie Leighton Park.
She was airlifted to a hospital as a precaution, according to deputies.
Her boyfriend and dog were not injured during the incident.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has arrived at the river and is waiting for its trapper to locate the alligator.
This incident comes after an alligator attack in May, when a woman was bitten after being knocked into the water from her canoe, leading to her death.
The victim, 61-year-old Cynthia Kay Diekem, was at Lake Kissimmee when she and her husband unknowingly approached an 11-foot alligator submerged in 2.5 feet of water.
The alligator thrashed as the canoe went over it, resulting in the victim and her husband being tossed into the water.
The victim was bitten in the torso, resulting in her death.
Florida is home to about 1.3 million alligators, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reports that bites are rare.
On average, there are eight unprovoked alligator attacks each year.
