An active shooter was reported at Florida State University on Thursday afternoon, police confirmed to .
Fatalities and injuries
Florida State University Police Chief Jason Trumbower says two people were killed and six wounded in a shooting at Florida State University.
The two deaths are not students at the university, but the shooter is believed to be a student. Six people are being treated at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, and the shooter is also receiving medical attention.
A statement from Tallahassee Memorial Hospital reads:
"TMH is actively receiving and caring for patients related to an incident that has occurred at Florida State University. At this time, details are still unfolding, and we do not yet have specific information to share. However, we want to assure the community that our teams are fully mobilized and prepared to provide the highest level of care and support to all those affected.
"We remain in close coordination with emergency responders and public safety officials. Out of respect for patient privacy and to ensure accurate information, we will provide updates as soon as they are available."
The Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare treated the Florida State victims who were wounded during the shooting on Thursday. Hospital staff members provided an update during a news conference on Friday. They said six patients were brought in with injuries, but were all in stable condition upon arrival. Three of those patients went through the operating room and have since come out. They said all six patients are expected to make a full recovery. The types of injuries included:
- Facial injuries
- Chest injuries
- Abdominal injuries
Information regarding the victims' identities and ages was not disclosed.
What happened
An alert message was sent out to students informing them of a "dangerous situation" in the area of the Student Union.
The alert message said law enforcement was on the scene or on their way. Students were also asked to seek shelter and wait for further information.
"Lock and stay away from all doors and windows and be prepared to take additional protective measures," the alert said.
At approximately 3:15 p.m., Tallahassee Police on X, the app formerly known as Twitter, that the campus was secured. However, there is still an ongoing investigation and parts of the campus are an active crime scene.

Suspect information
Police named the shooter as 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, a student at Florida State University.
The gunman is the son of a sheriff’s deputy, Jessica Ikner, whose former service weapon was used in the shooting, authorities said.
Students react
Florida State University student Emily Palmer, 21, told CNN she was near FSU’s student union when she was alerted to a “dangerous situation” on campus.
“I’m shaking … It’s just a lot going on,” she told CNN from the safety of her student housing.
“I’m concerned about my friends,” she said. “I have friends in class right who are getting evacuated by police with their hands up.”

Richard Rind, the university’s director of transportation and parking, told CNN he was sheltered in place Thursday as emergency vehicles descended on campus.
“Many emergency vehicles on scene but can’t see much as we are locked down in a building across the street,” Rind told CNN, adding he heard shots and saw people running as the incident unfolded Thursday afternoon.
