There's an unwritten language between Iowa's ace and center fielder. Hawkeye juniors Tory Bennett and Jalen Adams have been friends for 16 years.
"When she turns around, she looks at me and it's a reset for us," Bennett said.
"For as long as I can remember, we've always done everything together," Adams said.
They've been through a lot, like winning Fort Dodge's first state softball title back in 2021.
"Tory was always my shortstop in high school," Adams said. "Having her out in centerfield, we still communicate when I'm on the mound."
When you watch them, you'll notice they have a certain routine. They blow a kiss, followed by showing how many outs there are.
"Done it since freshman year," Adams said. "It just brings a sense of comfort knowing that you have someone on the team."
Iowa is 12-7 in the Big Ten and the former Dodgers are a big reason why. Adams is 23-5 with a 2.06 ERA. Bennett is flawless in the field with 77 putouts and no errors.
"We're both really competitive," Adams said. "Having that competitive energy with someone just pushes you forward."
And after 16 years as teammates, they communicate without saying a word.
"I give her a nod and she gives me a couple back. It's just an unwritten language that we have," Bennett said.
