Gilbert soccer star had the performance of a lifetime on a life-changing day
THE KNICKS. GILBERT, SOCCER STAR ANNA SALTZMAN ALWAYS KNEW THAT WHEN SHE LOOKED INTO THE STANDS, SHE’D SEE HER NUMBER ONE FAN. HER MOM, JERRY. BUT IN AN INSTANT, THAT ALL CHANGED. JEFF DUBROF HAS OUR STORY. SHE WAS VERY LOVING. SHE WOULD ALWAYS SAY HOW SHE LOVED BEING A MOM, LOVED DOING STUFF WITH US KIDS. THE SOCCER STAR’S MOM MADE SURE TO BE AT EVERY GAME. SHE WAS JUST ALWAYS SUPPORTING ME A LOT. NUMBER ONE FAN, WOULD YOU SAY? YEAH FOR SURE. BUT EVERYTHING CHANGED AT THE START OF 2023 WHEN JERRY WAS DIAGNOSED WITH STAGE FOUR OVARIAN CANCER. WHEN SHE WAS GOING THROUGH LIKE, CLINICAL TRIALS AND TREATMENT, SHE WOULD STILL WATCH ONLINE EVEN WHEN SHE WAS IN ROCHESTER AND MAYO. MAY 8TH HERE AT GILBERT HIGH SCHOOL WAS SENIOR NIGHT FOR THIS GIRLS SOCCER TEAM. AND WHILE ANNA BEGAN TO PREPARE FOR HER FINAL GAME IN FRONT OF THE HOME CROWD, JERRY REMAINED IN HOSPICE CARE. HER DAD WAS ON THE FIELD WITH HER THAT NIGHT TO CELEBRATE, BUT SOMETHING JUST FELT OFF. HE’S NOT BIG WITH HIS EMOTIONS A LOT. AT THE BEGINNING OF SENIOR NIGHT, HE WAS JUST, LIKE, REALLY PROUD. AND WHICH I GET AS A PARENT BECAUSE UNKNOWN TO ANNA, AT THE TIME, WHEN I SAW HER DAD, I KNEW THAT SOMETHING HAD HAPPENED. JERRY’S BATTLE WITH CANCER HAD ENDED. SHE DIED RIGHT BEFORE THE GAME. AND RATHER THAN TELLING ANNA, HER DAD DECIDED TO WAIT UNTIL AFTER THE GAME TO SHARE THE NEWS. AND WHAT HAPPENED NEXT ON THE BREAKAWAY? THAT’S ANOTHER ONE. WAS SIMPLY INCREDIBLE. HE HAS FOUR GOALS SO FAR AND SCORED FIVE GOALS IN THE GAME. I WAS THINKING, I DON’T REALLY KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON BECAUSE SHE IS. SHE’S REALLY HAVING A FANTASTIC GAME. AND I REMEMBER SAYING LIKE, MAYBE WE SHOULD SUB HER. ALL THE OTHER COACHES WERE LIKE, NO, LET HER RUN, JUST LET HER GO. IT WAS WHEN SHE CAME OFF THE FIELD, SHE LEARNED THE NEWS AFTER HE WON. HE CAME OVER TO THE BENCH AND TOLD ME AND KIND OF HUGGED ME AND JUST TOLD ME TO. JUST FEEL THE FEELS AND DO WHATEVER I THINK IS RIGHT. HER MOM WAS GONE, BUT SHORTLY AFTER, GRIEF GAVE WAY TO GRATITUDE. AFTER MY DAD TOLD ME, I KIND OF, LIKE I SAID, KIND OF CLICKED IN MY BRAIN THAT SOMETHING ELSE WAS GOING ON. I JUST KNEW SHE WAS KIND OF HELPING ME OUT A LITTLE BIT. AS THE PLAYOFFS ARE SET TO BEGIN, SHE KNOWS HER MOM WILL BE WATCHING DOWN ON EVERY SINGLE ONE. SOMETHING DEFINITELY HAS CHANGED IN HOW I’VE BEEN PLAYING, BECAUSE I’VE JUST BEEN DOING A LOT BETTER. LIKE IT’S HER HELPING ME OUT BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT A NUMBER ONE FAN DOES. I WOULD JUST THINK SHE’D BE REALLY PROUD AND JUST OVERJOYED. JEFF DUBROF. vlog. IOWA’S SPORTS LEADER. THANK YOU. JEFF GILBERT BEGINS ITS PLAYOFF RUN WEDNESDAY NIGHT WITH A REGIONAL

For Gilbert senior Anna Saltzman, there will never be anyone like her mom, Jeri. "She would always say how much she loved being a mom and how much she loved doing stuff with her kids," Saltzman said. Jeri made sure to be at all of Anna's soccer games. She was her number one fan. But all of this changed in an instant at the beginning of 2023 when Jeri was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer. It was a battle that raged on through ups and downs all the way until 2025. At that point, Jeri had to be placed in hospice care. But it didn't stop her from watching Anna play soccer."She would watch online," Anna said. On May 8, 2025, it was senior night for the Gilbert girls' soccer team. As Anna was preparing to play her final soccer game in front of the home crowd, Jeri remained in hospice care.

Anna's dad walked with her during the senior day festivities, but for Anna, something felt off.

"As soon I saw her dad, I knew something had happened," said Gilbert soccer coach Heather Currans.

What was unknown to Anna at the time is that Jeri's battle with cancer had ended. She died right before Anna took the field for senior day festivities.

Rather than telling her before the game, her family waited until after the game was over. And the performance that followed was incredible. Anna scored five goals in the game. A self-described best performance of her life.

"This was not something I was used to," she said.

It was when Anna came off the field that her dad shared the news: her mom was gone.

"My dad gave me a hug and told me to feel whatever I was feeling," Anna said. "I immediately started crying."

With her mom in hospice, Anna had anticipated this moment. With that in mind, grief gave way to gratitude and clarity.

"It clicked for me right away," Anna said. "I knew she was helping me out."

Now with the state playoffs set to begin this week, she's confident her mom will still be watching her games, just from a different place.

"I just know that she would be so proud of me."
