What to know about Section 8 housing benefits if government shutdown persists
The federal government shutdown is nearing the one-month mark, causing widespread effects for millions of Americans.
Some states are scrambling to find ways to account for shortfalls in food and child development assistance due to the shutdown.
Federal SNAP funding and funding for a group of Head Start preschool programs is set to run out Saturday. Aid for mothers to care for their newborns through the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, known as WIC, could run out the following week.
Here's how the shutdown could affect housing assistance.
Section 8 housing assistance
The , also known as Section 8, helps eligible low-income families, older individuals, veterans and disabled individuals afford housing.
Section 8 housing assistance will continue through at least mid-November 2025.
If the shutdown continues past November, new vouchers will not be issued and lease renewals may be in jeopardy. Housing inspections and new housing assistance applications will be paused until the government reopens.
Tenants who receive a Section 8 housing voucher are still responsible for paying their portion of the rent during the shutdown.
