New images showing how Grand Isle, Louisiana, looked before and after Hurricane Ida pounded the area demonstrate the devastation a major hurricane can cause. Jefferson Parish officials said Tuesday that Grand Isle is “uninhabitable” after a caravan was able to access the island and reported widespread damage. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellites provided another perspective of the damage done by the Category 4 storm. Dakota Smith, a scientist at the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA), shared before and after images of Grand Isle in a thread on Twitter capturing how powerful Ida was when it made landfall in Louisiana. One of the images shows areas of Grand Isle completely unrecognizable following Ida. You can even see in one before and after image that some structures changed locations. Jefferson Parish officials said 100% of structures were damaged by Ida and that it could take years to rebuild the island. You can click here to view satellite imagery of Grand Isle, Louisiana.
