U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley is standing up for Iowa’s booming wind energy industry after President Donald Trump took aim at wind power during a rally in Michigan.
During the event, Trump reaffirmed his support for coal and mocked wind turbines, saying, “You know what I don't give approval to, those stupid windmills that go round and round.”
Senator Grassley, a longtime Republican champion of renewable energy, said he has talked with the president about wind power.
“I like to tell him, when he talks about wind energy killing birds, there are more birds that fly into the glass towers in Washington, D.C., including his, that kill more birds than wind energy does,” Grassley told vlog.
According to a 2023 federal energy report, nearly 60% of Iowa’s electricity now comes from wind power, making the state the second-largest wind energy producer in the country. The industry has flourished over the past two decades, with many Iowa farmers installing wind turbines as a reliable source of extra income.
Grassley played a key role in that growth, having authored the original wind energy production tax credit in the 1990s. He said he’s not worried about Trump's comments translating into policy changes.
“The president isn't going to have any say in what we do to wind energy because it's going to be part of the bill that extends the 2017 Trump tax cuts,” Grassley said. “He's not a member of Congress, and he doesn't have a vote on that.”
While Grassley noted it’s unclear whether the next GOP tax bill will include any changes to wind tax credits, he expressed confidence that Trump will ultimately support whatever tax legislation Republicans pass.
