NEW AT FOUR STUDENTS AT ROOSEVELT HIGH SCHOOL GOT A BREAK FROM A FEW OF THEIR REGULAR CLASSES TODAY TO LEARN ABOUT JAZZ MUSICIANS FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY STOPPED BY THEIR AUDITORIUM TO PUT ON QUITE THE SHOW. vlog OLIVIA TYLER WAS IN THE AUDIENCE AND CAUGHT A GLIMPSE OF THE PERFORMANCE. TODAY, ROOSEVELT AND HOOVER HIGH SCHOOL KIDS GOT A LESSON IN JAZZ AND SANG THE BLUES WITH THE LEGENDARY HERBIE HANCOCK INSTITUTE OF JAZZ. IOWA IS ONE OF ONLY FOUR STATES THAT IS BEING VISITED BY THE INSTITUTE’S NATIONAL PEER TO PEER, JAZZ SEXTET. THE GROUP IS MADE UP OF TWO RENOWNED JAZZ ARTISTS AND SIX HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY. THEY PERFORMED AND LED A WORKSHOP FOR ROOSEVELT AND HOOVER’S JAZZ BAND AND CHOIR. IT’S PART OF THEIR EDUCATION INITIATIVE TO KEEP THE SPIRIT OF WHAT THEY SAY IS AMERICA’S FIRST MUSIC GENRE ALIVE. EVERY DAY. STUDENTS CLAPPED, SANG ALONG, AND EVEN GOT TO SEE ONE OF THEIR OWN TAKE THE STAGE AND BELT OUT SOME NOTES. I DON’T KNOW. HEY. EVERY DAY. EVERY DAY I GOT THE BLUE. I GOT THE BLUE. WE CELEBRATE THIS EXCITING NEW CHAPTER IN IOWA’S JAZZ HISTORY. A CHAPTER THAT WILL BE DEFINED BY INNOVATION, EDUCATION, AND THE LASTING LEGACY OF ONE OF THE MOST ICONIC FIGURES IN THE WORLD OF MUSIC, HERBIE HANCOCK. THE INSTITUTE OF JAZZ WILL BE AT NORTH HIGH ON THURSDAY AND LINCOLN HIGH ON FRIDAY BEFORE THEIR CONCERT ON FRIDAY AT NOCHE JAZZ AND CABARET IN DES MOINES. OLIV

Roosevelt and Hoover High School students got to miss a few classes Wednesday morning, but for good reason. They got a lesson in jazz and sang the blues with visiting musicians from the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz. Iowa is one of only four states that is being visited by the Institute's National Peer-to-Peer Jazz Sextet. The group is made of two renowned jazz artists and six high school students from all over the country. They performed and led a workshop for the high school’s jazz band and choir.It's part of their education initiative to keep the spirit of what they say is America's first music genre alive.The Institute’s vice president of education and curriculum development told students that jazz “evolved through the African American experience and started in New Orleans.”One Roosevelt junior even got to take the stage and belt out some notes as his classmates cheered him on. The Institute of Jazz made stops at Cedar Rapids Washington and Jefferson high schools earlier this week.
