Roosevelt and Hoover High School students got to miss a few classes Wednesday morning, but for good reason. They got a lesson in jazz and sang the blues with visiting .
Iowa is one of only four states that is being visited by the Institute's National Peer-to-Peer Jazz Sextet. The group is made of two renowned jazz artists and six high school students from all over the country. They performed and led a workshop for the high school’s jazz band and choir.
It's part of their education initiative to keep the spirit of what they say is America's first music genre alive.
The Institute’s vice president of education and curriculum development told students that jazz “evolved through the African American experience and started in New Orleans.”
One Roosevelt junior even got to take the stage and belt out some notes as his classmates cheered him on.
The Institute of Jazz made stops at Cedar Rapids Washington and Jefferson high schools earlier this week. They'll be at Des Moines North on Thursday and Des Moines Lincoln on Friday before their .
