From the archives: The history of Union Park's beloved Rocket Slide
Union Park's Rocket Slide is one of Des Moines' most historic landmarks.
The playground's official name is Astro City and it was designed and built in 1971 by Miracle Recreation for $6,200.
In 1992, the company sent a letter to the city recommending it be torn down because of safety issues and a lack of replacement parts. The slide was saved when local businesses and volunteers came together to make the necessary repairs.

The slide was almost grounded again in 2000 after a government watchdog agency deemed it dangerous. It reopened to the public after undergoing a $55,000 renovation.

City leaders approved more renovations in February and hope to have it reopened this fall for another generation to enjoy.
