ARTHRITIS CAN BE PAINFUL AND AFFECT YOUR DAY TO DAY LIFE. THANKS TO A FEW FACTORS, IT MAY BE MORE COMMON IN WOMEN THAN MEN. AS 11 NEWS ANCHOR LACEE GRIFFITH EXPLAINS, THERE ARE SEVERAL WAYS TO TREAT YOUR PAIN. ERICA LYNN WATERS SAYS IT WAS MARCH 2023 WHEN SHE STARTED FEELING PAIN IN THE JOINT OF HER BIG TOE. SHE TRIED SOME PAIN MEDICATION BUT DECIDED TO GET IT CHECKED OUT. SIX MONTHS LATER WITH DOCTOR CLIFFORD JIANG AT MERCY MEDICAL CENTER. SO SHE CAME IN WITH A BIG BUMP ON THE TOP OF HER TOE THAT CAUSED PAIN WHEN SHE WAS WEARING SHOES AND ALSO STIFFNESS. SO WHEN SHE WAS WALKING, WHEN SHE WOULD GO TOE OFF, IT WOULD HAVE PAIN. TOLD ME TO CHANGE MY SHOES, YOU KNOW. OF COURSE, THE HEELS MIGHT NOT BE A GOOD THING TO WEAR, SO I WANTED TO TRY TO. BROOKS ACTUALLY TRIED A HOKA AND THEY DID DO SOME RELIEF. NOTHING REALLY HELPED. BUT AS LIFE WOULD HAVE IT, SHE WAS PLANNING A WEDDING, SO SHE WAITED. SO FINALLY I CAME BACK TO HIM. FEBRUARY OF 2025. COULDN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE. GOT TO THE POINT WHERE THE TOE WAS KIND OF LIKE LEANING TO THE SIDE. AND I MEAN, I ACTUALLY HAD NO MOVEMENT AFTER THEY EXHAUSTED ALL OTHER OPTIONS, IT WAS TIME FOR ERICA TO HAVE SURGERY. IT’S VERY SIMPLE. IT’S A 20 MINUTE SURGERY WHERE YOU LITERALLY TAKE A HAMMER AND A CHISEL AND YOU TAKE OFF THE BONE SPUR AND CLEAN UP THE JOINT. YEAH, IT DOESN’T SOUND FUN, BUT ERICA SAYS IT WAS WORTH IT. BUT THE PAIN FROM THE SURGERY WAS NOT AS INTENSE FROM THE PAIN THAT I WAS DEALING WITH PRIOR TO THE SURGERY, THE PAIN PRIOR TO THE SURGERY. I MEAN, I COULDN’T SLEEP AT NIGHT. IT WAS HONESTLY, IT WAS REALLY WAKING ME UP. AND DOCTOR JIANG SAYS NO ONE SHOULD LIVE WITH THAT TYPE OF PAIN. HE SAYS HE DOES SEE MORE FOOT ARTHRITIS IN WOMEN THAN IN MEN, AND THERE MAY BE SEVERAL REASONS. THEY THINK THAT WOMEN MAY BE MORE PRONE TO ARTHRITIS THAN MEN. FIRST OF ALL, BECAUSE YOU LIVE LONGER THAN US. BUT SECONDLY, SOME OF THE SHOES THAT YOU WEAR MAY BE A LITTLE MORE OR LESS FRIENDLY THAN MEN’S SHOES TO THE JOINTS OF THE FOOT. AND FINALLY, AFTER MENOPAUSE, HORMONAL CHANGES MAY MAKE SOME DIFFERENCES IN THE BONES AND THE JOINTS.

Whether you are getting ready to train for a marathon or hitting the trails for a foliage walk, there is no denying that fall is the best season to get some extra outdoor steps in. Before you start trekking, we recommend a fall shoe refresh for maximum support and stability, and one of our (and podiatrists’) favorite sneaker brands is Hoka.Their cushioned comfort and pillowy insoles are just as great for those with plantar fasciitis as they are for those who are on their feet for long shifts, which means they come at a steep price (typically upwards of $150!). So we are always on the hunt to bring you discounted styles when we spot them. This month, we are going to be honest: The sales are sparse. Seriously, as we were writing this, two of the deals we had flagged completely sold out. Meaning, we cannot guarantee that any of these particular sizes, colors, or even styles will last longer than when we hit publish. But as of right now, we spotted discounts on editor-favorite Hokas up to 48% off.Related video above: Foot arthritis may be more common in women than menThe biggest discount we spotted was an elusive 48% off Hoka Arahi 7. The lightweight running shoe is great for those who over-pronate because of its J-Frame midsole, and it ensures a smooth and breathable stride with no extra bulk or weight. Though we have spotted this style on sale before, it has never been discounted quite this much (down to $64 in rare sizes and colors), so we are sure it won’t last long. Those who are working on improving their speed and training ahead of fall marathons should check out the Mach 6 while it is currently under $100 on Foot Locker’s website. Our editor tested the shoe in a lengthy review and said it not only was sleek, cushioned, and comfortable, but training in them shaved minutes off her mile.Compared to other third-party sites, which are seriously lacking in discounts overall, the Hoka website has a fairly stocked sale section. It’s worth noting that you will rarely (if ever) see any shoe discounted more than 20% there, though, meaning that the deals are moderate. However, among the so-so deals in this section, we spotted the best-selling Clifton 9s discounted in two different colorways. Given the popularity of this shoe, as well as its American Podiatric Medical Association status, the 20% discount is not something to scoff at. We also spotted the suede version of the Cliftons for 35% off on Zappos, if you are looking for a more stylish street shoe with the same podiatrist-approved insole.
