As the June 7 Primary Election approaches, candidates are getting to work and getting to know new voters now that district lines have changed."Barring some sort of scandal, incumbents always have an advantage," vlog Political Analyst Dennis Goldford said. "So typically, you might say, who's the incumbent, if there's been no scandal, that person likely has an advantage going into the particular race?" But Goldford said redistricting shakes up that age-old advantage. Goldford said, "what redistricting does following the whole process of reapportionment for the U.S. census is changed the playing field. In other words, the district you ran in may well not be the district's certainly not completely, that you won successfully in prior races?" In October 2021, Iowa lawmakers approved new congressional district boundaries. Iowa's third congressional district went from 16 to 21 counties. Pottawattamie, Mills, Freemont and Warren counties are no longer in District 3. But the new boundary lines expanded to include Greene, Clarke, Decatur, Lucas, Wayne, Monroe, Appanoose, Wapello and Davis counties."You may gain some supporters who voted for you, supported you last time. You may gain some voters who are not likely to support you. So again, those first elections following redistricting, whether it's for the statehouse, the state senate or the U.S. House, that changes the dynamic a little bit."
