Commitment 2022: Ryan Melton candidate profile
DEMOCRAT RYAN MELTON IS FIGHTING TO BRING CHANGE TO IOWA’S FOURTH DISTRICT. WE NEED MORE RURAL DEMOCRATS PLAIN AND SIMPLE CHANGE THAT WOULD BE HISTORIC. REPUBLICANS HAVE REPRESENTED THIS CHUNK OF NORTHWEST IOWA FOR NEARLY 30 YEARS. BUT MELTON SAYS HE’S UP FOR THE CHALLENGE. I’VE REALLY FOUND THAT IF YOU RUN FOR THE RIGHT REASONS AND IF YOU’RE EARNEST, OPEN AND HONEST, THE PEOPLE WILL REALLY HELP LIFT YOU UP AND SUPPORT YOU AND MAKE IT EASIER. AND SO IT’S REALLY BEEN A GASSROOTS, PEOPLE POWERED CAMPAIGN. AND I’M HONORED TO BE A PART OF IT. MELTON SAYS HE WANTS TO TACKLE ISSUES HE BELIEVES ARE DRIVING PEOPLE AWAY FROM RURAL IOWA. WE’VE SEEN MASSIVE POPULATION DECLINES AND A LOT OF THAT COMES DOWN TO THE BASIC SOCIETAL AND ECONOMIC NEEDS THAT OUR YOUNG PEOPLE NEED TO BUILD FAMILIES ON, THAT THRIVE. AND WE’RE SEEING MORE AND MORE IN THE FOURTH DISTRICT THAT THOSE NEEDS ARE JUST SIMPLY NOT THERE FOR OUR YOUNG PEOPLE. THE PRO-CHOICE CANDIDATE ALSO SAYS HE WANTS MORE ACTION TO PROTECT REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS. WOULD YOU SUPPORT LEGALIZING ABORTION ALL THE WAY UP TO BIRTH, OR IS THERE A CERTAIN POINT THAT YOU WOULD NOT LEGALIZE ABORTION? THE AMOUNT OF ABORTIONS THAT HAPPEN SO LATE AND DETER THEM THAT OFTEN ELICIT THIS QUESTION IS LESS THAN 1%. AND WHY DO THOSE ABORTIONS HAPPEN? THOSE ABORTIONS HAPPEN BECAUSE YOU HAVE PEOPLE WHO ARE PREGNANT WHO WISH TO GIVE BIRTH, AND THEN THERE ARE MEDICAL COMPLICATIONS. AND SO I AM TOTALLY IN SUPPORT OF LEAVING THAT DECISION UP TO THE PREGNANT PERSON AND THEIR PHYSICIAN. MELTON SAYS HE’S FOCUSED ON PUTTING PEOPLE FIRST AND REPRESENTING ALL IOWANS, REGARDLESS OF PARTY AFFILIATION. ARE PEOPLE IN RURAL IOWA REALLY WANT AUTHENTIC HISTORY? THEY WANT TO KNOW THAT THEY CAN TRUST THE POLITICIANS THAT ARE RUNNING TO REPRESENT THEM. AND THEY FEEL LIKE TOO MANY POLITICIANS OUT THERE SIMPLY DON’T. HENCE, WHY I’VE HAD A NUMBER OF REPUBLICANS, A NUMBER OF FORMER STEVE KING VOTERS THAT HAVE SAID THEY’RE GOING TO VOTE FOR ME BECAUSE THEY KNOW THAT I’M A GENUINE GUY AND THEY TRUST ME. RYAN MELTON IS A HUSBAND AND A FATHER OF TWO BOYS. HE’S A GRADUATE OF IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY, WHERE HE EARNED HIS BACHELOR’S IN HISTORY AND POLITICAL SCIENCE. HE WENT ON TO EARN HIS MASTER’S FROM KANSAS UNIVERSITY IN U.S. HISTORY. SINCE THEN, HE’S SPENT THE PAST 13 YEARS WORKING F

But beyond having both sides on the ballot, Melton says he wants to lead Iowa's 4th Congressional District in a new direction."The fight is worth fighting, regardless of the odds. There are a lot of people in our districts that are struggling right now. One thing that I'm really concerned about is you have a lot of young people leaving the district. And there's a lot of reasons for that, that we can solve for. There's a lot of struggles with affordable and accessible childcare and health care. There's worries about the long-term viability of our public schools, as we're seeing this ramp-up in an attempt to take public money out of public schools," Melton said. Melton says his top priority is putting people first."You know, the people of the district are always going to be my priority.
