Sonya Heitshusen is running for the Democratic nomination for Iowa House District 28, along with Tom Walton.Redistricting created new boundary lines that include parts of West Des Moines in Dallas County, Van Meter and Adel. Heitshusen spent her childhood on a family farm in eastern Iowa."I baled hay right next to my brothers. I castrated pigs once with my brothers. Attended Williamsburg Community High School, I worked outside of the farm from the time I was 14. All through college and have never quit working since," Heitshusen said.She spent her career as an anchor and investigative reporter, listening to the stories of Central Iowans she now hopes to represent."Voters allowed me into their homes for almost 30 years. And I'm now asking them to allow me to represent them in the state legislature," Heitshusen said.It was education that pushed her off the sidelines and into the race for Iowa House District 28. "I believe this far right extremist attack on education, specifically on our teachers, and the original proposal to jail them is out of line. And so that issue along with voting rights, and really fighting for working families, I believe that the state is headed in the wrong direction. And I think we can do better," Heitshusen said.Heitshusen says it's time to turn the page on divisive politics."It is time for elected officials to do the right thing for all people in Iowa, not just the big donors, not just the corporations. We need to start working together," Heitshusen said.
