Democrat Tom Walton on June 7 primary ballot for IA House District 28
Tom Walton is running for the Democratic nomination for Iowa House District 28 along with Sonya Heitshusen.
Redistricting created new boundary lines that include parts of West Des Moines in Dallas County, Van Meter and Adel.
Walton is a native Iowan from Cedar Falls.
"Graduated from the University of Iowa law school and came here in 1989. And I started with a firm, there are only 35 attorneys in the firm and when I left in 2020, there were over 100," Walton said.
Walton has spent most of his life as a trial lawyer, but he's hoping to move from the courtroom to the Iowa Statehouse to represent the people of Iowa House District 28.
"I've been very politically active in terms of supporting Democratic candidates, organizing Democratic activities. I have been thinking about running for office for a long time," Walton said. "I have a little more time and I would like to devote that time to be of public service."
Walton says concerns over the state of democracy propelled him into politics.
"I would be lying if I didn't tell you I am concerned about the state of politics in the state of democracy," Walton said. "That did motivate me. Jan. 6 was kind of a wake-up call."
He says his top priorities would be reversing restrictions on voting and the 4% flat income tax rate that passed the Republican-led statehouse this year. And he says his service on several state boards makes him ready for the job.
"I have drafted legislation. I have reviewed legislation. I have represented people — individuals in front of the state and agency proceedings. There'll be no learning curve for me," Walton said. "I've done it, I'm ready to go, and I offer my services to the folks in the district. I want them to be the most important clients of my life."
