Iowa high school football coaching legend Dick Tighe has died at the age of 94.
Eric Pratt of the Fort Dodge Messenger .
Tighe spent 31 years coaching Webster City, eventually ending his career as head coach at St. Edmond in Fort Dodge. He also coached at Kuemper Catholic and Iowa Falls-Alden.
He retired following the 2016 season with a career record of 432-167-8 over 63 seasons. At the time, it was an all-time record for coaching wins in the state. Ankeny Centennial coach Jerry Pezzetti eclipsed the wins record in 2022.
As Tighe told vlog in 2013, he didn't have any trick plays, and relied on the same set of around 6 plays for nearly his entire career.
"Trick play?" he laughed. "We don't have any. I could take a fullback from 25 years ago and they could go right out there and run the plays."
His players loved what he stood for. "I can look back in 20 years or so and say I was really lucky to have a guy like that teach me the game of football," one former player said.
