The Crusaders went up 60-0 in the first half and the Eagles forfeited at halftime. Siouxland Superintendent Nic Scandrett said they made the decision to forfeit the game, and cancel the rest of the varsity schedule, out of concern for student-athletes' safety.Another 8-player team announced in August that it was canceling its varsity football season due to low numbers. The Lone Tree Lions, who were 2-6 last season, reportedly had less than 10 players show up to the first day of practice.Game of the weekOur Week 2 game of the week is Newton at defending Class 4A state champion North Polk. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. at Comet Field in Alleman.Both teams opened the season last week with wins. North Polk beat Lewis Central, 27-24. And Newton beat Carlisle, 49-42. Senior James Armstrong led the Comets with 279 yards passing and 2 touchdowns, and added 67 yards on the ground with another score. Senior Bryce Burke had 3 catches for 102 yards. For Newton, senior Caden Klein threw for 399 yards and 5 touchdowns against Carlisle and ran for another 21 yards and a touchdown. Junior Isaiah Hansen ran 17 times for 140 yards and a score. Senior Finn Martin caught 6 passes for 213 yards and three touchdowns, and junior Qhjuan Coley had 4 catches for 143 yards and 2 scores.Stat leaders after Week 1Beau Burns put on a show last Friday. The BGM (Brooklyn) senior quarterback ran for 427 yards and six touchdowns in a 47-14 win over Columbus, and added another 118 yards and one touchdown through the air.Burns leads all classes in rushing after Week 1 of high school football in Iowa. Iowa high school cancels remaining varsity football schedule after just one game


A private high school in northwest Iowa has canceled the rest of its varsity football games after just one week.

Siouxland Christian School in Sioux City opened the 8-player season last Friday at Coon Rapids-Bayard. The Crusaders went up 60-0 in the first half and the Eagles forfeited at halftime.

Siouxland Superintendent Nic Scandrett said they made the decision to forfeit the game, and cancel the rest of the varsity schedule, out of concern for student-athletes' safety.

Another 8-player team announced in August that it was canceling its varsity football season due to low numbers. The Lone Tree Lions, who were 2-6 last season, reportedly had less than 10 players show up to the first day of practice.

Game of the week

Our Week 2 game of the week is Newton at defending Class 4A state champion North Polk. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. at Comet Field in Alleman.

Both teams opened the season last week with wins. North Polk beat Lewis Central, 27-24. And Newton beat Carlisle, 49-42.

Senior James Armstrong led the Comets with 279 yards passing and 2 touchdowns, and added 67 yards on the ground with another score. Senior Bryce Burke had 3 catches for 102 yards.

For Newton, senior Caden Klein threw for 399 yards and 5 touchdowns against Carlisle and ran for another 21 yards and a touchdown. Junior Isaiah Hansen ran 17 times for 140 yards and a score. Senior Finn Martin caught 6 passes for 213 yards and three touchdowns, and junior Qhjuan Coley had 4 catches for 143 yards and 2 scores.

Stat leaders after Week 1

Beau Burns put on a show last Friday. The BGM (Brooklyn) senior quarterback ran for 427 yards and six touchdowns in a 47-14 win over Columbus, and added another 118 yards and one touchdown through the air.

Burns leads all classes in rushing after Week 1 of high school football in Iowa.
