In Iowa's 1st Congressional District, the Republican and Democratic candidates are already set.Republican and incumbent Mariannette Miller-Meeks will face off against Democrat Christina Bohannan in the November general election. Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks has spent the last two years on Capitol Hill.She's hoping the people of Iowa's First Congressional District will send her back for another term."I'm running for reelection because I found that I've been able to have a voice whether it's on the select subcommittee on the Coronavirus task force, whether it's on the AG and Labor Committee," Miller-Meeks said. But Democrat Christina Bohannan is hoping to take Miller-Meeks' spot in Congress. "I want people to know that I am fighting for working people. And if they elect me as a congresswoman, that's what I'll do," Bohannan said. Miller-Meeks argues her experience qualifies her for the job.But Bohannan wants a different approach in office."I think It's very important that we get back to, you know, as Americans fighting like family instead of fighting like enemies. So that's why I'm in this race. I really hope to bring people together and to work for working people in Iowa," Bohannan said. "I found that having a voice of a physician — and also someone who comes from my background— a veteran as well as a doctor as well as a nurse, that has been very helpful in passing legislation," Miller-Meeks said. vlog Political Analyst Dennis Goldford says a first re-election bid is always difficult, but the outcome of the race could have an impact for years to come."Was that initial election a fluke and you're turned out after one election? Or can you demonstrate some staying power? So if they were to win reelection in these newly configured districts, barring some sort of a scandal or something like that, they're likely to be there for a while given the Iowa Political map," Goldford said. In Iowa's 1st Congressional District, the Republican and Democratic candidates are already set.
