Jennifer Konfrst announces she will run for Congress
Iowa House Minority Leader Jennifer Konfrst is now in the race for Iowa's 3rd Congressional District.
vlog was the first to learn Konfrst wants to take on Republican incumbent Zach Nunn in the 2026 election.
It's expected to be one of the most competitive congressional races in the country.
Konfrst says she's hoping to flip the congressional seat, which covers central and southern Iowa and includes Des Moines, West Des Moines, Winterset and Ottumwa. She'll have to earn the nomination over fellow Democrat and Iowa Sen. Sarah Trone Garriott, who announced her candidacy for the seat earlier this week.
She tells vlog she made this decision on Inauguration day when Donald Trump began his second term as president. Konfrst now wants to use her experience at the Statehouse to make change in Washington.
A spokesperson for the National Republican Congressional Committee provided a statement to vlog:
"Out of touch Democrat Jennifer Konfrst is an ineffective ‘leader’ of an ineffective and shrinking super minority. Now, she and radical Sarah Trone Garriott will fight to be the most extreme Democrat left standing after a messy primary, while Zach Nunn delivers results for Iowans."
A spokesperson for the Nunn campaign also provided a statement to vlog:
"Zach Nunn isn't jockeying for headlines, he's working across the aisle to deliver real results for Iowans. Whether it's securing our southern border, cutting reckless government spending, or protecting benefits for our most vulnerable communities, he's focused on service over politics. Ranked in the top 10 most bipartisan members of Congress, Zach Nunn consistently puts Iowa first."
