Iowa postal union warns against potential privatization of mail service
The American Postal Workers Union in Iowa is raising concerns over the potential privatization of the U.S. Postal Service, launching a new TV ad to alert customers about the issue.
"This is the Wall Street memo that the White House doesn't want you to see," the ad states.
The ad targets a document the union claims was sent to investors by Wells Fargo Equity Research, discussing a possible path to privatization and higher mail service prices. Kimberly Karol, president of the American Postal Workers Union in Iowa, emphasized the impact of privatization, saying, "It's going to affect all Americans. Not just postal workers."
Karol participated in a rally Thursday morning in New York City, where postal service workers gathered in front of the Wells Fargo office near Wall Street.
"If the Postal Service is privatized, that's exactly what's going to happen to our mail service. We will cease to exist. People in Iowa will either have to pay exorbitant amounts of money in order to receive their mail, or we will have to wait, for days and days," Karol said.
Wells Fargo responded with a statement, saying, "The research report we published did not recommend the privatization of the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). The report analyzed the impact that potential privatization would have on FedEx, UPS, and the transportation and shipping industry."
Despite Wells Fargo's clarification, postal worker unions remain concerned about the growing threat of privatization, fearing it could cripple a vital American institution. Karol stressed the importance of affordable communication and services, stating, "Everybody deserves to have some affordable way of being able to communicate, to be able to receive goods and services. And the postal service is the answer to that."
