Primary 2022: Glenn Hurst candidate profile
Glenn Hurst has been a doctor since 2006. He is the Democratic Party Chair of the Rural Caucus and a Minden City Councilman. He was also the Chair of the Third Congressional District Central Committee.
Candidate profile:
Glenn Hurst is a doctor, a small business owner and now a candidate hoping to add U.S. Senator to his list of titles.
"I'm a family practice physician in the small town of Minden, Iowa," Hurst said. "I do bring a business background, a business experience, to the job as well, which is what you tend to see more of in the U.S. Senate. But also as a physician, I bring the ability to evaluate the quality of data and make decisions based on data. So I think that's a really important tool to bring to our Senate, especially as we approach things like the climate crisis and health care."
Hurst is no stranger to politics.
"I've also been the chair of the Rural Caucus for the Iowa Democratic Party. With that job, I've traveled around the state quite a bit. I chaired Cindy Axne's district getting her re-elected to Congress, so I feel like I have my finger on the pulse of Iowa politics and what rural Iowans care about. And I know how to win. And I think that's an important thing for a Democratic candidate," Hurst said.
Hurst is vying for a Senate seat that's been held by Republican Charles Grassley for more than 40 years. But he will face off against challengers from his own party first.
Hurst describes himself as a progressive candidate in this race.
"I've employed a strategy to appeal to those folks who care about Democratic principles like health care for all addressing the climate crisis and fair wages and fair negotiating for workers," Hurst said.
Hurst's top priorities are supporting health care for all, ensuring voting rights and addressing the climate crisis.
"We've seen Chuck Grassley really take a turn in a way that has been unexpected in the last 10 years. His support of Trump and his acceptance of Trump's endorsement shouldn't come as a shock," Hurst said. "In order to win against Chuck Grassley, we're going to have to put a candidate up against him that has a stark contrast to Chuck Grassley and I believe I have that contrast."
