Meet the candidates running for Iowa's second congressional district
In Iowa's 2nd Congressional District, the Republican and Democratic candidates are already set.
Republican incumbent Ashley Hinson will face off against Democrat Liz Mathis in the November general election.
Before Ashley Hinson went to Capitol Hill or Liz Mathis won a spot in the Iowa Senate, you may have seen them in your living room on the TV news.
Both candidates spent years behind the anchor desk in eastern Iowa, but now they're facing off for a spot in Congress.
vlog's Amanda Rooker spoke with Hinson and Mathis about what they hope to bring to Washington.
"I want to speak for those voices that are not often heard," Mathis said.
"For Iowans, a common-sense voice is very much so needed in Washington," Hinson said.
Republican Ashley Hinson has spent the last year serving Iowa's 1st Congressional District.
But after the once-a-decade redistricting process, she's now hoping to represent the new District 2.
"I'm running for reelection, because I believe as a mom with a minivan and a mortgage that Iowa families need to have their story told in Washington, D.C., Iowa farmers need to have their story told. Iowa small business owners need to have their story told," Hinson said.
Democrat Liz Mathis is challenging Hinson, hoping to bring a fresh face to Washington.
"I've had a lot of experience, not only in my journalism career, 27 years in Journalism, but also working with children who have mental health issues and at the State Senate," Mathis said. "So I hope they vote for me because I have experience."
Hinson and Mathis will face off in November.
